The Strength & Conditioning staff kicks off the Fall semester with a productive week of training and development. We are excited to welcome back our student-athletes to another great year of improvement! Coach Walrod and Coach Roberts finished the summer attending the Exxentric High Performance Clinic in Illinois. Coach Evans presented at the clinic as well, his presentation was titled, Using Data to Promote Collaboration & Improved Outcomes.

Additionally, we added two new volunteer coaches, Coach Ryan Renken from North Scott, Iowa and Coach Taylor LaJeunesse from Taylorsville, Utah. Coach Thomas Lang from Fort Dodge, Iowa and Coach Tahsin Khataei from Sanandaj, Iran return as volunteer coaches for another semester.

It has been a busy summer full of staff education and Intern exercise progressions. We are excited to announce that Coach Holland, Olympic Assistant Strength Coach, and a past intern of ours, Lorenzo Tomesiello, passed the Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified Certification through the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association! The staff also had another education session led my Sport Psychologist, Aubrette Kinne, regarding motivation, confidence, and pre-performance routines. This summer began with a productive start. We welcomed a new intern class; Asa Britt, Lorenzo Burns, John Keifer, and Logan Norcross. The staff partook in a sport psychology led discussion regarding pre-performance routines. We look forward to intern curriculums, intern exercise progressions, and more sport performance team discussions!

We have had a productive month of travel and conference attendance. As a staff, we attended the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association’s National Conference in Kansas City. It was great to see fellow collegiate strength coaches and past Iowa Olympic Strength Interns who are having success in the field. Additionally, Coach Roberts and Coach Renteria were invited to attend the USOC High Performance Strength & Conditioning Symposium in Colorado Springs. They returned having thoroughly enjoyed their experience and brought back innovative ideas. Finally, Coach Maxwell embarked on adventure to Melbourne, Australia for both travel and a Tony Robbins Seminar. He came back inspired and ignited for the summer. Congrats to Iowa Track & Fields post-season performance and the Big Ten Tournament title!

April’s Sport Performance was a great one with our very own Cody Roberts giving a presentation on the utilization of Omegawave. Additionally, we are gearing up for the end of the semester and are excited for some planned conferences around the corner.

Coach Robert’s finished up his ‘Training Theory’ Intern Curriculums this month. The staff enjoyed this month’s Sport Performance Forum given by our very own, Coach Zach Walrod and Sport Psychologist, Aubrette Kinne, on Sleep. Finally, we wanted to congratulate both Men’s and Women’s Basketball on their post-season performance and wish the spring sports good luck in their post-season pursuits!

February was a busy month for staff education. Coach Evans led the Sport Performance Forum for the month on Systemizing Recovery Strategies. Additionally, the staff had a number of curriculum presentations for the interns, specifically, Resume & Cover Letter Preparation, Excel Program Building, Insight Regarding the Evolution of a Strength & Conditioning Professional, and Training Theory.

Coach Roberts posted another article on SimpliFaster titled, Principles for the Periodization of Volume and Intensity with Autoregulation. The staff was excited to welcome back our returning interns, Coach Bruce Lee and Coach Thomas Lang. Additionally, we are ready to educate and work with our new spring semester intern class, Coach Brady Meinders and Coach Jared DeFauw.

Our very own Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach, Cody Roberts, wrote an article for SimpliFaster titled, A Plan to Progressively Acclimate and Coach Female Athletes in the Weight Room. Additionally, the staff enjoyed the department’s monthly Sport Performance Forum led by Aaron Brock from USA Volleyball’s Sport Perfromance Team. This past year has been full of growth and opportunity. The Hawkeye Strength family is ready to excel in 2019!

Coach Maxwell led the Iowa City Cub Scouts - Troop 210 through an introduction of the weight room. The Cub Scouts earned a Fitness Badge due to their high effort. Our very own Sport Performance Analyst, Kyle Peterson published his study titled Resting Heart Rate Variability Can Predict Track and Field Sprint Performance. The staff has been taking part in and enjoying the recent Nutrition Forums led by Nicole White, Director of Sport Nutrition.

The staff enjoyed the monthly Sport Performance Forum regarding Psych of Injury led by Carmen Tebbe Priebe, University of Iowa Psychologist. There has been a new addition to the weight room layout with turf lining the North wall to allow for more locomotive space. Finally, Coach Evans attended a Tableau Workshop in Kansas City to further his understanding of our data management platform.

With the new school year underway, Hawkeye Strength welcomed the Fall intern class of Reid Miller and Thomas Lang. Quinn Hollan also joined the Olympic staff as the new Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for Wrestling. Former intern Derek Stork was offered and accepted the Assistant Director of Athletic Performance position at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Summer 2018 Recap

Coach Evans presented on two topics, Mitigating Hamstrung Injuries in the Sprints and Monitoring the Non-Negotiables, at the GAIN Conference in Houston, TX. In addition to travel and conference attendance, Coach Maxwell participated in a Tony Robbin's, Unleash the Power Within, located in Chicago, IL. Members of the staff, Coach Evans and Coach Roberts sat on a panel discussing Tensiomyography for the department's monthly Sport Performance Forum. To finish out the summer, the strength and conditioning staff has participated in collaborative discussions with the Sport Psychology staff to further understand student-athlete burnout, motivation, goal setting, and distress.

Annual CSCCa 2018

Coach Maxwell along with assistants Cody Roberts, Lindsay Dinkelman and Zach Walrod traveled to Fort Worth, TX for the annual Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association conference.  At the conference, former intern Joey Davey received the Lance Vermeil Scholarship award, this is the second time a former Hawkeye Strength intern has received the award.

Mid-Spring Recap

 Continuing education was a focus this month, with Coach Roberts attending the NSCA State Clinic in Cedar Falls.  The Sport Performance forum held a roundtable discussion about Return to Play.  Former intern Ryan Koester accepted a Graduate Assistant position at the University of Montana with their Strength & Conditioning department.

Kicking off our Sports Performance Forum

This month kicked off the first "Sport Performance Forum" a monthly presentation organized to facilitate education for our sports performance departments of Sports Nutrition, Strength & Conditioning, Athletic Training and Sports Psychology. Sports Performance Analyst, Kyle Peterson, was accepted into the Informatics PhD program at Iowa earlier this month.

Welcoming our Spring '18 Interns

 The Hawkeye student-athletes are back in school and we welcomed our new Spring '18 class of interns.  Joining us this semester are Jori Robertson, TC Hager, Justin Kuehn, Ethan Patterson, Andrew LeMense and Zach Pasano.  Bruce Lee and Kyler Heckinger are back for their second semester.

Wrapping up 2017

Current intern Adam Kearns accepted a graduate assistant position as Florida State University and intern Cameron Taylor also accepted a job at Rock Valley Sports Performance in Bettendorf, IA.  Staff members Cody Roberts, Zach Walrod and Lindsay Dinkelman made a site visit to the new facility at North Scott High School.
